How To Prepare for the UAE Motorcycle Test

If you want to ride a motorcycle in the UAE, you must first pass the UAE motorcycle driving test and acquire a license; unless you have a valid license from one of the exempted countries. Otherwise, there is no shortcut around it and you must prove that you’re a competent rider during the driving test.

If you’re down for it, we’re going to discuss how to prepare for the UAE motorcycle test. Let’s get down it, shall we?

UAE Motorcycle Test

Register in a Driving School

First things first, you need to register in an accredited driving school in the UAE. However, if you want to acquire an Emirati motorcycle license, you need to be 17 years old and above. During the registration process, some of the documents that you will be asked to bring usually include:

  1. Original UAE ID if you’re a citizen.
  2. Original passport with visa if you’re a foreigner.
  3. No objection letter.
  4. Eye test clearance certificate.
  5. Current driving license if you’re a foreigner; it needs to be translated to English or Arabic.
  6. 2 passport photographs.

Attend the Theory Lectures

After you’ve signed up to a registered driving school, the first order of business will be to attend compulsory theory lectures. The theory lectures will be 8 hours long and you can schedule daily or weekly sessions depending on your preference. Some of the topics that you will be taught during the theory lectures include rules & regulations, traffic signs, road safety, and risk management.

Once you’ve completed the theory lectures, you can go ahead and book the theory test.

Pass the Theory Test

The theory test is usually done on a computer screen and you have to answer multiple-choice questions. However, the number of questions you will be asked will depend on where you will be taking the theory test; although, in most Emirates, you will be required to correctly answer 23 questions out of 35 questions.

After you pass the theory test, you will be cleared for practical motorcycle lessons.

Complete the Motorcycle Practical Lessons

The practical lessons will be done in your driving schoolyard with an assigned instructor. If you’re new to motorcycle riding, you will be required to complete 15 hours of practical lessons. But if you possess a foreign motorcycle license with more than 2 years of experience, you can complete 8 hours of practical classes.

Some of the skills you will be taught during the practical lessons include: motorcycle balancing and control, lane discipline, motorcycle positioning, observation of traffic signs, parking techniques, and emergency stops.

After you’ve done at least 12 hours of the practical classes, your instructor will take you for further training on public roads; but you will wear a learner’s vest and ride in a convoy.

Pass the Parking or Yard Test

The parking or yard test is usually done in your driving school away from the traffic. The instructor will assess your motorcycle control skills to know if you’re ready for the road test. During the yard test, you will be asked to complete five riding maneuvers which include:

  1. Riding your motorcycle on a straight line without putting your feet down.
  2. Riding your motorcycle across the yard without hitting cones.
  3. Leaning left or right on your motorcycle to make a turn.
  4. Changing directions while riding on your motorcycle without hitting cones.
  5. Performing an emergency braking maneuver without crossing a marked line.

Once you’ve passed the yard test, the driving school will schedule an internal assessment test to be done on a public road.

Pass the Internal Assessment Test

The internal assessment test is the final evaluation process before you’re cleared for the road test. Think of it as a mock test with the same rules as the road test but it’s supervised by your driving school instructor. During the trial, your mission will be to follow a specific route set up by the instructor without making any silly mistakes.

If you fail the assessment test, you can retake it. However, if you fail more than five times, you will be required to repeat your practical classes before you can try again. Of course, if you pass the assessment test, the next step will be to take the road test.

The Road Test

The road test will be the final hurdle before you can acquire the motorcycle license. Since you will be on a motorcycle, the instructions will be relayed through an ear device and the examiner will be monitoring you closely from a car. It should take about 10 to 30 minutes for the examiner to evaluate your riding skills during the road test.

If you fail the road test, the examiner will tell you where you went wrong so you can try again at a later date. But if you pass, you will receive your motorcycle driving license as soon as possible.
